The starting point

What needed solving.

The background

Acte 2 Théâtre is a neighbourhood theatre in Vaise, in Lyon's 9th arrondissement. The venue hosts children's shows, adult theatre, school performances and workshops, and is also available for hire.

The constraint

Five activities, five audiences: families, adult theatregoers, teachers, workshop students, event organisers. Each is looking for different information, and a site organised chronologically loses all of them.

The response

Organise by audience rather than by calendar. Each activity has its own entry point, its own vocabulary and its own booking path. The calendar exists, but as a cross-cutting view — not as the main structure.

Measured, not claimed

The scores recorded at delivery.

Lighthouse scores for the live site. We publish them as they are: when one is low, its cause and the plan to fix it are set out below rather than glossed over.

Design & art direction

Every design choice, and the reason for it.

  1. Entry by audience

Families, adults, schools, workshops, venue hire. Visitors recognise themselves at a glance; a calendar mixing all five would force them to sort through it.

  2. School bookings taken seriously

Teachers look for an educational pack, age levels, running time and a group rate. That information has its own page; anywhere else, it would have cluttered things for the general public.

  3. Venue hire as an offer in its own right

Capacity, technical equipment, rates, availability. It is a steady source of income, almost always relegated to the bottom of a contact page.

Inter 400

Deliberately contemporary rather than “theatrical”: the venue mainly hosts young audiences, and an overly solemn register would have put families off.

Engineering

What's under the bonnet.

  • Next.js
  • React
  • Tailwind
  • Vercel
  1. Third-party ticketing, loaded on demand

The ticketing module only loads on click. A third-party widget present on every page would have weighed down the whole site for an occasional action.

  2. A typed programme

Productions, dates, audiences, prices and running times sit in one shared data file. The five entry points and the cross-cutting calendar are all generated from it.

Search engine optimisation

How the site makes itself findable.

  1. One family of searches per audience

“Spectacle enfant Lyon” (children's show), “théâtre Vaise”, “sortie scolaire théâtre Lyon” (school theatre trip), “location salle spectacle Lyon 9” (performance venue hire). None of them could have been served by a single page.

  2. Event and Place markup

Each performance is an Event linked to a Place node describing the venue, its capacity and how to get there.

Site structure

What was delivered.

  • Home — five entry points
  • Young audiences
  • Adult theatre
  • School performances
  • Workshops
  • Hire the venue
  • Calendar (cross-cutting view)
Method

How the project unfolded.

  1. Architecture

Five audiences identified, structured by audience rather than by date.

  2. Design

Distinct entry points, a family-friendly register.

  3. Development

    Typed programme, deferred ticketing.

  4. SEO

One family of searches per audience.

Questions

What we are often asked.

Because visitors are not looking for a date, they are looking for a kind of outing. The calendar remains useful as a cross-cutting view, but as the main structure it forces every audience to sift through what does not concern them.
