What needed solving.
The background
L'Archiste offers numerology, birth charts, an ephemeris and twelve divination arts, free of charge and without sign-up, with a personal journal kept on the device.
The constraint
Two contradictory requirements. On the one hand, accuracy: a birth chart relies on ephemerides and a time zone conversion; a one-minute error shifts an ascendant. On the other, restraint: this market is saturated with garish interfaces and paid upsells disguised as free services.
The response
The calculation is treated as an engineering problem — reference ephemerides, historical time zones, local time of birth — and the interface as a reading tool. No account, no upselling, no notifications. The journal stays in the user's browser.

Every design choice, and the reason for it.
Deliberate restraint
Careful typography, a calm background, no animated stars or purple gradients. Visual seriousness is a commercial differentiator here: it is the promise that the calculation is serious too.
The result first, the reading after
The chart is displayed at the top; the lengthy interpretations are collapsed by section. A user who can read a chart does not have to wade through three screens of text.
A private journal, stated in black and white
The journal is stored locally and the interface says so explicitly, with export and deletion a click away. For content this personal, ambiguity about storage would be a design flaw.

Calculations in the browser
Ephemerides and planetary positions are calculated client-side. No date of birth is transmitted — the service's most sensitive data never leaves the device.
Historical time zones
A birth in 1978 in Algiers cannot be converted using today's offset. The historical time zone database is bundled in: that is the detail that separates an accurate tool from a gimmick.
Local storage only
The journal and saved charts live in the browser's storage, with JSON export. No database, so no data processing to declare.

Explanatory content rather than promises
The in-depth pages explain what each practice actually calculates. This content captures curiosity-driven searches and stands out in a market that promises without explaining.
Usable by everyone.
Since June 2025, the European Accessibility Act has required digital accessibility from a large share of online services. We build it in at the design stage rather than retrofitting it.

The circular chart is paired with a table of positions: without it, the entire result would be invisible to a screen reader.
