The starting point

What needed solving.

The background

Brasserie Georges is a Lyon landmark in Perrache, open since 1836, and the largest brasserie in France. Its Art Deco dining room is as much a fixture of the city's imagination as of the guidebooks.

The constraint

A place of this stature is not sold: it is staged. The difficulty lies in doing justice to an exceptional dining room on a six-inch phone screen, while serving everyday needs — booking for four on a Saturday night, organising a banquet, checking opening hours.

The response

Make the decor the structure of the site. The frescoes and ironwork provide the palette, the rhythm and the dividing motifs. Each section is a room; navigating is a stroll through the building. Beneath the staging, the practical functions stay in the foreground: book, hire, get there.

Design & art direction

Every design choice, and the reason for it.

  1. The palette comes from the place

Railway-carriage green, brass, garnet red and cream: the colours are sampled from the dining room's frescoes and ironwork. None of them was invented.

  2. Art Deco motifs as dividers

The dividing rules echo the geometric motifs of the decor, in lightweight SVG. They set the rhythm without a single extra image.

  3. The 190th anniversary feature

A dedicated anniversary section, treated like a press kit: dates, figures, archives. It is content that gets shared and quoted.

  4. Private hire treated as a product

Capacity per room, layouts, packages. Banquets are a major part of the business for a brasserie of this size; they deserved more than a paragraph.

Type system

Display

Poiret One / Cormorant

Body text

Inter 400

A geometric Art Deco display face for headings, balanced by a contemporary sans-serif for all body text — otherwise the page becomes unreadable.

Engineering

What's under the bonnet.

  • Next.js
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind
  • Vercel
  1. Static rendering and progressive images

A site built around staging is heavy by nature. Each photo of the dining rooms is served in several widths and modern formats, loading progressively as you scroll.

  2. Motifs in SVG, never as images

The Art Deco dividers weigh a few hundred bytes and stay sharp at every resolution.

Search engine optimisation

How the site makes itself findable.

  1. Heritage and transactional searches

“Brasserie Georges Lyon”, “plus grande brasserie de France” (largest brasserie in France), “restaurant Perrache” on one side; “réserver brasserie Lyon” (book a brasserie), “banquet Lyon” on the other. Two intentions, two families of pages.

  2. Restaurant and Event markup

The brasserie carries a complete Restaurant node; the 190th anniversary, a dated Event node. Dated events are picked up in dedicated search result features.

Site structure

What was delivered.

  • Home — the dining room
  • The menu
  • Book
  • Private hire — capacity and packages
  • 190 years — the feature
  • History since 1836
  • Getting here
Method

How the project unfolded.

  1. Studying the place

Survey of colours and motifs, archives, figures.

  2. Art direction

Sampled palette, vectorised motifs, rhythm of the sections.

  3. Design

A stroll from room to room, functions in the foreground.

  4. Development

    Static, progressive images, SVG motifs.

Questions

What we are often asked.

Because a written recommendation cannot be judged. A working concept can be visited, tested on a phone and shown to a team. It is an unsolicited proposal: it has not been approved by the brasserie and we do not present it as a client reference.
