The starting point

What needed solving.

The background

La Compagnie l'Entr'Axes is an amateur theatre company in Lyon, directed by Agnès Faye since 2009: productions, workshops and a repertoire.

The constraint

An amateur company has neither a maintenance budget nor a webmaster. The site has to run on its own for months, stay accurate on dates that keep changing and make people want to book — all with no recurring cost.

The response

Static rendering, free hosting, content held in readable data files. The programme carries real dates: past productions move automatically into the repertoire instead of lingering as “upcoming”. The site cannot go out of date without someone intervening.

Measured, not claimed

The scores recorded at delivery.

Lighthouse scores for the live site. We publish them as they are: when one is low, its cause and the plan to fix it are set out below rather than glossed over.

Design & art direction

Every design choice, and the reason for it.

  1. A dramatic register

A high-contrast serif, deep black, curtain red. Theatre has strong visual codes; ignoring them in favour of a generic design would have cost the company its identity.

  2. The programme first

Upcoming dates come before the company's introduction. Someone visiting a theatre website wants to know what is on and when; the company's history interests them afterwards.

  3. Workshops as the second pillar

Workshops keep the company alive as much as the performances do. They have their own page, with time slots, prices and sign-up — not one line on the “about” page.

Engineering

What's under the bonnet.

  • Next.js
  • React
  • Tailwind
  • TypeScript
  • Vercel
  1. Dates that switch over automatically

Each production carries its own dates. Once the last performance has passed, it leaves the programme and joins the repertoire, with no intervention. That is what allows a site without a webmaster to stay accurate.

  2. 98 for performance

Static, two self-hosted fonts, no animation library, correctly sized images. The best performance score in the portfolio, on the smallest budget.

  3. Zero running costs

No application server, no database, free hosting. For a non-profit association, a website's longevity depends first and foremost on what it costs.

Search engine optimisation

How the site makes itself findable.

  1. Dated Event markup

Each performance carries an Event node with date, venue and booking link. That is what makes it eligible for display in event results.

  2. Going-out searches

“Théâtre amateur Lyon” (amateur theatre), “spectacle Lyon ce week-end” (shows this weekend), “atelier théâtre adulte Lyon” (adult drama classes). Three distinct intentions, three pages.

Accessibility

Usable by everyone.

Since June 2025, the European Accessibility Act has required digital accessibility from a large share of online services. We build it in at the design stage rather than retrofitting it.

  1. Contrast checked on a black background

94: the curtain red on deep black was lightened to hold 4.5:1 on body text. The remaining points concern identified decorative elements.

Method

How the project unfolded.

  1. Constraints

No maintenance budget: the site has to keep itself up to date.

  2. Design

Dramatic register, programme at the top.

  3. Development

Static, automatic date switching, free hosting.

  4. SEO

Event markup, three families of searches.

Questions

What we are often asked.

By making obsolescence impossible rather than relying on vigilance. Dates entered once move productions from the calendar to the repertoire on their own. The only work left is adding the next season.
