The starting point

What needed solving.

The background

The JOD Congress is the Journée d'Oncologie Digestive (Digestive Oncology Day) organised by the Hospices Civils de Lyon. The 2026 edition is the fifth: a scientific programme, university hospital speakers and DPC accreditation.

The constraint

The audience is made up of practitioners who decide in two minutes, between two consultations, on three criteria: the speakers, the topics and DPC accreditation. Everything else is noise. On top of that comes a strict calendar constraint — the site exists for one date.

The response

The scientific programme is put front and centre, with speakers named alongside their affiliations. DPC accreditation is announced on the very first screen because it determines whether attendance is funded. Registration is a short funnel, with a summary and immediate confirmation.

Measured, not claimed

The scores recorded at delivery.

Lighthouse scores for the live site. We publish them as they are: when one is low, its cause and the plan to fix it are set out below rather than glossed over.

Design & art direction

Every design choice, and the reason for it.

  1. The programme before the event

Sessions, times, speakers and affiliations are available without scrolling. A practitioner judges a congress by its scientific committee, not by its visuals.

  2. DPC shown at the top

Accreditation for DPC (Développement Professionnel Continu, France's continuing professional development scheme) is the criterion for funding. Mentioning it in the footer would amount to hiding it.

  3. An institutional register

HCL blue, sober typography, no frills. A university hospital congress is not sold with the codes of a tech conference.

Programme times use tabular figures: a misaligned column of times makes a programme impossible to skim.

Engineering

What's under the bonnet.

  • React
  • Vite
  • Tailwind
  • Supabase
  • Vercel
  1. Registrations in a database

Supabase for registrations, with row-level access policies and automatic confirmation. Data on healthcare professionals is processed with a defined retention period.

  2. A typed programme

Sessions, times, speakers and rooms in a single dataset, which feeds the on-screen display, the printable programme and the Event markup.

  3. An identified performance job

71 for performance, due to speaker portraits that were not normalised. The fix is trivial and scheduled — this is an event site whose absolute priority was the date.

Search engine optimisation

How the site makes itself findable.

  1. Specialist searches

“Congrès oncologie digestive 2026” (digestive oncology congress), “JOD Lyon”, “DPC oncologie”. Low volume, maximum intent: every visitor is a potential registrant.

  2. Complete Event markup

Date, venue, organiser, attendance mode and status. A dated, marked-up event appears in dedicated search result features.

Accessibility

Usable by everyone.

Since June 2025, the European Accessibility Act has required digital accessibility from a large share of online services. We build it in at the design stage rather than retrofitting it.

  1. A programme readable by keyboard

The programme is a semantic table with associated headers, not a visual grid. That is what makes it navigable with a screen reader and print cleanly.

Site structure

Method

How the project unfolded.

  1. Scoping

Three decision criteria identified: speakers, topics, DPC.

  2. Design

Programme at the top, institutional register.

  3. Development

Typed programme, registrations in a database, confirmations.

  4. Launch

An absolute date constraint, optimisations deferred until after the event.

Questions

What we are often asked.

Because an event website has a date, and missing that date makes the site useless whatever its score. The optimisation work is identified and scheduled; it was not done before launch, and that was the right call.
