The starting point

What needed solving.

The background

A Lyon-based coach hire company with drivers: transfers, excursions, group travel, and school and association transport.

The constraint

A coach quote depends on the number of passengers, dates, route, duration, number of vehicles, options and whether the vehicle is kept on standby. Asking for all of that in a form drives people away; asking for none of it makes a quote impossible.

The response

A five-question estimator that gives an instant price range, with the details refined afterwards by phone. The three most technical variables are left out of the form: they do not change the order of magnitude and would cost a third of all enquiries.

Design & art direction

Every design choice, and the reason for it.

  1. Five questions, one price range

Passengers, departure, destination, dates, type of service. The result is a range presented as such, with the assumptions written out.

  2. Occasions rather than vehicles

The site talks about school trips, weddings, corporate away days and airport transfers — not “55-seat coach”. Customers think in terms of the occasion.

  3. Destination photography

The imagery shows where you are going, not just the vehicle. In group tourism, it is the destination that triggers the decision.

Passenger numbers and price ranges use tabular figures: a badly aligned comparison table reads like guesswork.

Engineering

What's under the bonnet.

  1. A client-side estimator

Instant calculation, with no server call and no personal data collected up front. Contact details are only requested once the price range has been shown.

  2. The heaviest performance job in the portfolio

58 for performance. The cause is identified: a library of unoptimised destination images, inherited from the content supplied, and an interactive map loaded as soon as the home page opens. The plan is written — normalising the visuals, loading the map on demand — and on its own represents an estimated gain of more than thirty points. We publish it rather than keep quiet about it: anyone can check it in a minute.

Search engine optimisation

How the site makes itself findable.

  1. One page per occasion

“Location autocar mariage Lyon” (wedding coach hire), “transport scolaire Rhône” (school transport), “navette aéroport Saint-Exupéry groupe” (group airport shuttle). These are the real searches — never just “coach hire”.

  2. Departure area marked up

Departure from Lyon and the service radius are declared. In transport, the depot's location determines the price, and therefore relevance.

Method

How the project unfolded.

  1. Slimming the form

Eight variables cut to five without losing the order of magnitude.

  2. Design

    Entry by occasion, destination imagery.

  3. Development

    Client-side estimator, quote funnel.

  4. Next

Normalising the visuals and loading the map on demand.

Questions

What we are often asked.

By testing their effect on the result. A variable that does not change the order of magnitude of the quote has no place in an entry form: it can be asked over the phone, once contact has been made.
