The starting point

What needed solving.

The background

Zigana has been on place Valmy, in Vaise (Lyon 9), since 2011. Traditional Turkish cooking, grills, and a 100% veal kebab prepared on site.

The constraint

The category suffers from a quality prejudice the restaurant does not deserve. The site had to shift perception towards Turkish cuisine and homemade food, without losing the high-volume searches that account for most of the revenue.

The response

We keep the word that brings in the traffic and immediately pair it with proof: “100% veal”, “prepared on site”, “since 2011”. The menu puts grills and traditional dishes on the same level as the sandwich. Search targets both registers in parallel.

Measured, not claimed

The scores recorded at delivery.

Lighthouse scores for the live site. We publish them as they are: when one is low, its cause and the plan to fix it are set out below rather than glossed over.

Design & art direction

Every design choice, and the reason for it.

  1. Photography of the real product

Photos taken on site, no stock images. In this market, a catalogue photo is spotted immediately and destroys the promise of homemade food.

  2. Proof on the first screen

“100% veal”, “homemade” and “since 2011” are shown before the menu. They are exactly the three objections of a hesitant customer.

  3. A menu ranked by register

Grills and traditional dishes first, sandwiches after. The order of the menu is a positioning choice as much as a layout choice.

Engineering

What's under the bonnet.

  • React
  • Tailwind
  • Vercel
  1. Lightweight out of necessity

Many visits come in on patchy 4G, at lunchtime, out in the street. The site fits into a few dozen kilobytes of HTML and CSS, including the images on the first screen.

  2. An identified accessibility job

The score of 88 comes from insufficient contrast on two secondary components. The point is documented and will be fixed on the next pass — we would rather write it down than leave it out.

Search engine optimisation

How the site makes itself findable.

  1. Two registers of searches

“Kebab Vaise” for volume, “restaurant turc Lyon 9” (Turkish restaurant) for positioning. Giving up the first would have cost most of the traffic; sticking to it alone would have boxed the restaurant in.

  2. Anchored on place Valmy

The name of the square appears in titles and markup. It is the landmark people in Lyon actually use.

Method

How the project unfolded.

  1. Positioning

Two registers held together, proof at the top of the page.

  2. Photography

    Shot on site, real products.

  3. Development

    Lightweight site, ranked menu.

Questions

What we are often asked.

No — it is the word that brings in customers. Keep it and surround it with proof. Removing the word removes the traffic without changing the perception.
